The 2011 North County Prayer Breakfast

Bob Vernon

Bob Vernon began his relationship with God when he was a teenager. He first taught teen boys in a Sunday School class, and then became a leader of the Hume Lake Christian High School camps. By the end of his police career in 1992, Bob was known as a “follower of Jesus Christ” and had an off-duty ministry that has spread worldwide. His opportunities to speak on moral and spiritual issues expanded to the secular as well as church-related organizations. Bob’s spiritual gifts are teaching Biblical principles in a practical way using his police experiences and evangelism.

After attending BIOLA University for two years, God led Bob to join the LAPD. He changed his majorto Police Science at CSU at Los Angeles, then received an MBA at Pepperdine University, an advanced degree at Northwestern University and graduated from the FBI’s National Executive Institute. At the LAPD, he progressed through the ranks to Assistant Chief of Police, with 10,000 personnel under his command. After leaving the LAPD, Bob founded Pointman Leadership Institute (PUI) which serves the top leadership in more than 35 countries worldwide and has offices in South America, Africa and the UK. PLI presents biblically based leadership principles with an optional module that includes the Gospel.

Dr. David “Chappy” Walden

Dr. David Walden, affectionately known as Chappy, is a fascinating man who, after founding and running the second largest tax and financial organization  in Orange County for 20 years, returned to college to complete a Bachelors degree in Theology, followed by a Masters in Divinty, and finally a Doctorate in Organizational Systems from Bethel University. Over the years, Chappy has served as a Children’s Director, Youth Pastor, Executive Pastor and Senior Pastor. In 1995, he founded the mission organization, MOTE International (Ministry on the Edge), which takes Christ-Centered ministry and concentrates on working side by side with secular institutions.

Wonderful accounts of changed lives have been the result of his focus on Prisons in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, Inner-City Ministries to the homeless and needy in San Diego, Faith-based Homework Clubs in the public school system, and Chaplaincy within secular healthcare settings.  Chappy is currently focusing on MOTE’s ministries in the Dominican Republic, where he is facing many challenges and dangers. Come hear the incredible story about his full submission to God’s calling and the power of prayer.

 Tom Frye

“I don’t use the word miracle lightly but this is truly a miracle”

Raised on Long Island and recruited as a lacrosse player, Tom graduated from the United States naval Academy. Upon completion of flight training, he was selected to fly the F-14 Tomcat, graduated from the Topcun navy Fightere Weapons School, and was later selected to fly in some of the “topgun”movie scenes.

Having experienced nearly 2200 hours in the F-14, some 600 carrier landings, and a tour as Commanding Officer of the decorated 111 Fighter Squadron aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, Tom found himself at the Pentagon.  On September 11, 2001, Tom survived the terrorist attack on the Pentagon which included his office.  That, however, is not the miracle Tom refers to.  Despite the many successes and challenges in his life, the miracle he refers to is a 3 year physical battle which appears to have been won and is recognized by Tom as the reult of intensive prayer.

A retired Navy Captain, Tom and his wife Deshua have four children and he is currently a Pastor at Immanuel Bible Church in Springfield, Virginia.

Tom Osborne
The 2007 North County Prayer Breakfast

Tom Osborne

A fourth generation Nebraskan, Tom Osborne is best known as the head football coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 1973 to 1998, leading them to 13 conference championships and three National titles.
For the last six years, Tom has represented Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District in the House of Representatives and was narrowly defeated in a run for the Governorship this last year. Tom graduated in 1959 from Hastings College in Nebraska with a BA and has earned both a Master of Arts and a Doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Nebraska.Tom and his wife Nancy reside in Lincoln, Nebraska and have three children and four grandchildren.

As a Christian man who spent the majority of his life in the coaching profession and working with young men, Tom Osborne was easily able to combine the necessity of daily prayer in living out his vocation. Coach Osborne’s major emphasis is on the building of character in the men he worked with and how the model for that is the Lord Jesus Christ. In keeping with the intent of the morning, prayer remains the major focus and this year prayer included our policitical leaders, our youth, and our families and community. Dr. Larry Lucas completed the morning by allowing us to work through the Lord’s Prayer with him by praying silently as he provided a brief thought about each verse.
